CFR Facilities: Forest and Wildlife Research and Educational Facility

Forest and Wildlife Research and Educational Facility
Supporting hands-on learning, research, and outreach, this facility includes a 3,125 square foot outdoor aviary, the 11-acre Johnie R. Dawkins Memorial Deer Unit, forestry greenhouses, natural areas for forestry research, and more.
Facilities Include

Deer Pens
The Deer Lab consists of five pens, seven small holding pens, and a handling area. Set to expand, the Deer Lab will offer educational facilities, from a conference center and outdoor classroom to a youth interaction and conservation pen.

Aviary
The Avian Science Center has a laboratory for specialized avian physiology and endocrinology research, office space, and 14 experimental facilities rooms- 10 of which are open-aired and netted so birds can be exposed to natural elements and 4 of which are closed to manipulate environmental conditions.

National Training Academy
Headquartered at MSU in the Center for Resolving Human-Wildlife Conflicts, the NTA is the nation’s first academy dedicated to training in resolving human-wildlife conflicts, providing instruction to USDA Wildlife Services personnel.

Greenhouse
With over 4,000 square feet and 3 greenhouse bays featuring automatic and programmable controls for temperature, light and watering, each bay of the Forestry Greenhouse has a wet wall, exhaust fans, heaters, grow lights, sliding tables, and a retractable shade cloth. Two of the bays have an open-roof system to quickly evacuate heat. To complete the facility, an outside irrigation area, headhouse for mixing and storing planting media, and laboratories near the greenhouses are present.
