Job Description:

Clemson University is searching for an Assistant Professor of Forest Management and Silviculture. It is a 12-month, tenure-track position but is 100% Extension.

We seek a candidate who uses silvicultural and management-oriented approaches to provide leadership in developing and delivering forest management and silvicultural Extension programs to clientele, working closely with the Extension Forestry and Natural Resources Team and other Extension agents across South Carolina. The position will also coordinate with Clemson partners to include the Forestry Association of South Carolina, South Carolina Forestry Commission, U. S. Forest Service, U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation Service and the forest products industry. This position is critical for supporting our land grant mission.

The ideal candidate will have expertise that complements existing faculty, with preference for applicants who have diverse skill sets including silviculture and forest management and have a strong interest in developing state wide Extension programs. Will work directly with the Natural Resource Program Team Leader to develop, implement, and evaluate critical Extension Forestry related programs and or projects. This position will work with academic and research faculty and supporting Extension agents across South Carolina to develop the most current programs for the clientele. The position will require broad participation in state organizations, full participation in the Extension Forestry and Natural Resources Team as well as participation on departmental committees. The successful applicant will establish working relationships with all stakeholders and develop several state-wide programs as well as reach out to county landowner organizations to learn more about their needs for training. These programs may be developed for in-person delivery as well as through online delivery systems.

Qualifications
Qualifications include a Ph.D. in forestry, ecology, or other related field with research specialization in silviculture, forest management, and sustainability, or related areas. A B.S. Degree in Forestry from an SAF-accredited program or equivalent is desired. The candidate must have the qualifications necessary to be a registered forester in SC. Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral extension experience, evidence of extension productivity, and a demonstrated ability to secure external funding to support an active extension program to support the land grant mission of Clemson University. Job Description:

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has an immediate need for a permanent, full-time district biologist to manage conservation delivery in Georgia and South Carolina. This position will be responsible for all facets of the NWTF’s habitat conservation, wild turkey and upland wildlife management programs. Collaborative efforts will be with NWTF field staff, volunteers, governmental agencies, corporate partners, major donors, and policy liaisons to meet and exceed goals for NWTF’s initiative, Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. The District Biologist will maintain and expand conservation delivery through the development of new partnerships, grants, agreements, and innovative solutions focused directly within the state, region, and/or of national significance. While location is negotiable, a centralized duty station near Augusta, GA is preferred.

Essential Duties:

  • Identify opportunities for wildlife habitat improvement projects for game and non-game species
  • Work closely with the USFS, USFWS, NRCS, and state agency partners to identify opportunities prioritized within NWTF’s Big 6 of Wildlife Conservation and Focal Landscapes to conserve / enhance habitat and/or access lands through habitat initiatives
  • Assist respective state agencies with all wild turkey related management and decision-making activities; Provide guidance for programmatic turkey-focused habitat grants/research
  • Administer NWTF’s habitat initiatives and assist the NWTF State Chapter and state agency personnel in the administration of the  Hunting Heritage Super Fund Program in Georgia and South Carolina
  • Represent NWTF at local, state,  and regional  meetings
  • Provide relevant information to NWTF staff, volunteers and Communications Department for promotion, marketing and awareness of area priorities and activities. Contribute to Turkey Country magazine / Turkey Call television, NWTF state newsletters, websites, blogs, etc. as requested
  • Develop, administer, implement, and monitor current grants and agreements
  • Identify funding sources, such as grants, contracts, donations, sponsorships, in-kind contributions, and permits, to support conservation delivery objectives
  • Provide daily oversight of contractors & manage multiple ongoing habitat improvement projects on public lands within Georgia and South Carolina
  • Assist in developing and reviewing projects, handling project administration, and implementing conservation delivery
  • Assist regional directors and state chapter boards with development and outreach activities, and work with development staff for fundraising opportunities
  • Track important hunting and conservation related regulations and legislation, land use planning and policy within GA and SC; communicate regularly with State Chapter Presidents and NWTF Volunteer Relations staff and may serve as the NWTF Policy lead for state of residence
  • Seek training to expand leadership skills and conservation working knowledge

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Preferred candidates should possess experience working in Southeastern ecosystems with associated management techniques. Knowledge of forest and wildlife management is preferred; Map reading and GIS/GPS technology, ArcGIS skills, Powerpoint, Outlook, Google Suite, & Social Media ability to effectively communicate and work with the general public, state / federal / Non-Governmental Partners, other cooperators and peers; ability to collect and record metrics regarding activities within the NWTF’s reporting systems; proficient skills in the use of Microsoft Office including spreadsheets, internet use, and computer applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a natural resources related field and a minimum of two (2) years of professional experience, and/or a Master’s Degree or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred with 3+ years professional experience; ability to meet requirements for TWS Associate or Certified Wildlife Biologist.
  • Wildlife management, forestry, conservation implementation, habitat management, and wildlife biology experience desired with in-depth knowledge of wild turkeys, big game, and upland birds
  • Experience in supervising multiple project staff is highly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills, networking, communication (ex., public speaking, verbal, presentation, inter-personal, writing), project management, and leadership ability is preferred.
  • Experience working with Federal / State agencies (ex. NRCS, USFWS, USFS, GADNR, SCDNR), corporate, and industry partners.
  • Experience working with major gift contributors, private land owners, and land managers. Policy and legislative experience preferred.
  • Able to work in a wide range of field conditions often requiring rigorous physical activity in remote locations.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, produce effective results, and meet deadlines; applicant must be self-motivated, responsible and have ability to solve problems.
  • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and live within Georgia or South Carolina.

 

This position will incur moderate travel throughout the 2 states, including multi-night stays. This positions also arranges for or provides Division wide training and software license maintenance. Duties:

  • Oversee, manage, and distribute over $100,000 to landowners in order to meet specified conservation needs such as prescribed burning and LLP plantings.
  • Work cooperatively with the NRCS state and local offices, agency partners, and other NWTF staff to provide technical assistance to landowners, primarily through the development of conservation plans and implementation of conservation practices via Farm Bill Programs.
  • Coordinate private landowner outreach via field days, workshops, and forestry / wildlife expos

The primary objective of the national forestry initiative coordinator is to deliver the NWTF’s conservation mission at the National, Regional and State level via the Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. (STH2).  This will be accomplished working in partnership with NRCS while providing oversight, administration, and coordination of 24 foresters across 23 states.  This position will report directly to the NWTF’s Director of Conservation Operations for the Central Region and work collaboratively with NWTF staff to coordinate forestry capacity and programmatic delivery in states within the NRCS Forestry Initiative (NFI). 

DUTIES

·      Conduct and provide administration support for all agreements associated with the NFI and associated foresters

·      Assist with technical writing as needed to support the NWTF and NRCS partnership

·      Promote the NFI through enhanced internal and external communications pursuant to progress and accomplishments; provides required quarterly/annual reports and oral presentations as required

·      Serve the partnership as the coordinator for the NFI, to promote and facilitate consistency in program interpretation, communication, implementation and delivery at the National level

·      Foster collaboration and cooperation amongst all partners engaged in the NFI, but primarily NWTF field staff and NRCS field staff and state, regional, and National staff

·      Oversee the hiring (advertising vacancies, scheduling interviews, onboarding) of NFI foresters through coordination with NWTF staff overseeing NFI states and NFI foresters

·      Coordinate subject matter material and information dissemination as well as job-related training of foresters in cooperation with NWTF staff

·      Provide internal and external insights pursuant to staff accomplishments, performance towards annual Goals & Objectives, etc.

·      Provide effective and regular communication with NRCS State Conservationists and other NRCS Points of Contact involved in the NFI, and NWTF field staff on a monthly basis to assess progress, needs, and significant challenges, etc., as well as any external funding partners

·      Maintain and solicit matching financial contributions from partners, including tracking within the NWTF’s Conservation Reporting Portal, invoicing, etc.

·      Provide updates and news to NWTF’s Communications Department pursuant to the NFI and  conservation delivery within respective states; contribute to Turkey Country magazine, Turkey Call television, NWTF state newsletters, websites, blogs, etc. as requested

·      Other functions as assigned by supervisor

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Preferred candidates will possess experience working in forested ecosystems and knowledge of wild turkeys, forest wildlife and their habitat requirements, to include T&E species; knowledge of forest management and planning, and working with and understanding of the Farm Bill and its programs.  The ability to effectively cooperate with private landowners, the general public, cooperators and peers; skills in communicating both orally and in written form to convey clear, persuasive messages that positively influence the thoughts and actions of others; proficient skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications are required for this position. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·      Bachelor’s degree in natural resources along with at least six (6) years of professional experience, two (2) of which must include program oversight and administration; and/or a Master’s degree with four (4) years of professional experience or equivalent

·      Ability to work independently without close supervision and ability to determine work priorities daily, weekly and monthly to maximize time efficiency is required 

·      Must have good public speaking and presentation skills for both technical and nontechnical audiences, ability to write for both professional & general audiences

·      Basic computer skills such as e-mail and Microsoft Office suite

·      Strong knowledge of forest management and associated research techniques

·      Ability to navigate in remote and rural areas, communicate with land managers and provide advice to agency workers in the field

·      Must be willing to incur moderate travel including overnight stays of three to five nights or more

·      Ability to use & apply GIS technologies

·      Must demonstrate a team attitude, proven leadership skills, excellent organizational skills and an ability to motivate others through a positive attitude

 

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

·         Must be able and willing to work, often alone, in a diverse range of climatic and topographic conditions, and within remote areas with limited access and amenities and other extreme conditions as warranted.  Must be able to walk several miles per day in the conditions described above.  Must be able to drive or ride in a vehicle long distances frequently.  Ability to lift and carry up to a minimum of 20lbs.

The Director disseminates best practices, provides training and analyses to best implement organizational measures of success, and develop key partnerships with public & private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions, innovative scientific methods, analysis, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs. He/she establishes the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within the 9-state range of longleaf pine, defines conservation priorities in the area of responsibility, leads and manages team(s) which support and improve conservation efforts, and build strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field. He/she engages local community support for local conservation efforts, negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities, and develops and implements conservation strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • The Longleaf Pine Whole System encompasses nine TNC business units and three TNC divisions.
  • The Director is responsible for leading the longleaf pine whole system program.
  • Manages cross functional, cross business group and other forms of working structures that cross the traditional vertical business units of function and geography and achieves results by persuading, convincing, or influencing TNC staff across the organization to identify and implement shared strategies.

  • Prepares multiple-use compartment prescriptions and environmental assessment reports based on field examination.
  • May administer or supervise the administration of timber stand improvement contracts.
  • Acts as the SAT (Silviculture Activity Data-base), FACTS, or current program, coordinator for the district/zone. Incumbent maintains/updates the district/zone silvicultural electronic folders, electronic activity database and associated GIS layer(s). Assists the Zone Silviculturist in developing out-year target and budgeting requests for the District Silvicultural program. Prepares District attainment and accomplishment data. Assists the Zone Silviculturist in the preparation of various reforestation/thinning upward reports. Maintains and updates SAI (Sale Area Improvement) plans for active timber sales. Initiates revision or SAI plans due to changes in sale contract value and/or changes in project priorities. Prepares annual KV fund balance report.
  • Serves as Contracting Officer Representative. Develops contract specifications for review by contracting officer, prepares cost estimates, recommends procurement methods, including multi-year and multi-treatment contract. Develops contracts for non-traditional treatments and unique specifications needed for those contracts. Develops contract language, obtains and monitors contract compliance per specifications. Assists contract officer in drafting modifications, when required. Assist contracting officer in claim dispute resolutions in accordance with contract administration handbook.

Skills/Traits we are looking for:

  • Professional knowledge of forestry principles and concepts in order to apply conventional techniques to solve problems involving application of silvicultural practices and prescription of proper treatments.
  • Knowledge of Agency policies, procedures, and requirements concerned with multiple-use and sustained yield of forest resources; and understanding of multiple-use land management theories and strategies.
  • Knowledge of current reforestation techniques and procedures sufficient to adapt them to local conditions.

Job Overview: Under general supervision, is responsible for professional wildlife management work of average difficulty in the implementation of wildlife management practices in a moderate-sized wildlife area or facility; assists in the implementation of management practices in a large, complex wildlife area or facility; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features: An employee in this class performs a variety of activities associated with the management of wildlife. Work involves wildlife habitat development and maintenance, public relations activities, facilities maintenance, wildlife law enforcement within assigned geographic area(s) and assisting in research data collection. This class differs from that of Wildlife Manager 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for a larger, more complex wildlife area or management responsibilities.

Work Activities:

Guiding, Directing, and Motivating Subordinates:

  1. Adheres to all laws, agency directives, policies, procedures, and protocols to provide an example to assigned subordinates.
  2. Assists and guides assigned subordinates in resolving problem situations.
  3. Supervises the activities of assigned workers on WMA’s.
  4. Leads in the maintenance and repair of agency equipment and buildings on assigned WMA’s.
  5. Leads in the implementation of projects and management techniques to provide optimum fish production and fishing opportunities on assigned WMA’s and other designated state owned properties.
  6. Manages field trials and hunts on WMA’s.

Training and Teaching Others:

  1. Plans, conducts and evaluates on-the-job training, to include training with equipment, policies, procedures, and techniques, for assigned subordinates as required.

  8. Provides assistance to other local law enforcement agencies as required.
  9. Develops and manages sharecrop contracts with local farmers.
  10. Makes recommendations on management systems and planning for wildlife populations and habitat, consulting with stakeholders and the public at large to explore options.
  11. Informs and responds to public regarding wildlife and conservation issues, such as plant identification, hunting regulations, and nuisance wildlife.
  12. Disseminates information by writing reports and by making presentations and giving talks for schools, clubs, interest groups and interpretive programs.
  13. Subcontracts with loggers or pulpwood cutters for tree removal and to aid in road layout.
  14. Negotiates terms and conditions of agreements and contracts for forest harvesting and forest management.
  15. Provides advice and recommendations on forestry issues.

  1. Qualifies annually with assigned firearms.
  2. Conducts safe handling of weapons according to policy.

  3. Implements projects and management techniques to provide optimum fish and/or wildlife habitat development.
  4. Conducts wildlife inventories in assigned area.
  5. Operates, maintains and provides security for a variety of equipment, such as automobiles, trucks, bulldozers, tractors, boats and motors, chain saws, mowers, and hand tools.
  6. Prepares and monitors budget; orders supplies and equipment.
  7. Conducts controlled burns to manipulate habitat.
  8. Recommends revisions in hunting, trapping and fishing regulations or in animal management programs so that wildlife balances or habitats can be maintained. Conducts agency restoration, management, eradication, and biological survey projects.
  9. Collects and reports information on populations or conditions of fish and wildlife in their habitats, availability of game food or cover, or suspected pollution.
  10. Designs and implements control measures to prevent or counteract damage caused by wildlife or people.
  11. Uses wildlife agricultural techniques involving trees, shrubs, grains, grass, and other wildlife food and cover plantings and cuttings. 
  12. Surveys areas and compiles harvest figures to determine compliance and wildlife population management objectives.
  13. Restocks area lands, lakes, and streams with fish and/or wildlife.
  14. Conducts fish population surveys using standardized fisheries collection techniques.
  15. Manages and manipulates water levels to enhance wetland habitat.
  16. Participates in search-and-rescue operations and in firefighting efforts.
  17. Determines age, sex, and weight of collected fish and/or of harvested game.
